He fought for the Empress at the siege of Winchester and was taken prisoner; took part in the attack on W ilton Nunnery iu 1143, and " lento tandem eruciatu tortus, interiit." See J. H. Round's " Oeoffinj de MamUri/le," pp. '275-270. It seems probable that this William, wh" v. p., was an i/ilrr br. of Earl Patrick and not a uuinii/er one — wdio was (as was his br. Walter) a Canon of Rradcnstoke — as is generally staled. ( h ) In 1 142 tt iitshire " was one of the four counties mentioned for the Earldom promised to Aubrey de Vere. ( c ) J. H. Hound" (in hit * Oetfrtfi it Mui.ilri ill,-," p. 2/1) states that *' the earliest mention <if Patrick as an Earl that I have yet found is in the Devizes charter (114!') of Henry." Conithope seems to doubt the creation altogether, stating that tin/ Patrick " is styled Omits by Matthew of Westminster and Roger de Hoveden, and ill the Liber Niger of the Exchequer is called ('nuns Palrieim, these are, however, the only evidences of the origin of this dignity." There is, however, li.tle doubt that the creation may be placed among the fifteen Earldoms created during the reign of King Stephen, as to which see vol v, p. 86, note " a," tub " Lincoln." (A) Doubtless at this early period the earldom was that of the county, tho' called by the name of the residence of its possessors. It is to be observed, however, that (during the continuance of the Earldom of Salisbury, as granted iu 1337 to the Montacute family) the Earldom of Wiltshire was granted in 1397 to William le Scrope ; so also in 1449 to James liutler ; in 1470 to Juhn Stafford; in 1509 Hi Henry Stafford ; in 1529 to Thomas Boleyn, and finally, iu 1550, to William Patilet. {<=) As to this date it is to be observed that Faster that year was on 31 March.
