(a) The date of 162J is giveu in Clutterbuck's " Herts," vol. i, p. 238 ; which, if correct, contradicts that of Hie subsequent marriage. ( b ) In Manningham's Diary, 12 Oct. 1602. an unpleasant picture is given of his domestic life. "The Earl of Sussex keeps Mrs. Sylvester Morgan (sometime his Lady's gentlewoman) at Dr. Dayly's house as his mistress, calls her his Countess, hires Capt. IVhitlocke, with money ami cast suits, to brave his Countess with telling of her how he buys his wench a waistcoat of £10, and puts her in her velvet gown, etc. ; thus not content to abuse her by keeping a common wench, he strives to invent means of more grief to his lady, who is of a very goodly and comely personage of an excellent presence and a rare wit." ( c ) To this Jane, born Shute, his wife's da., the said Earl devised the estate of Attlehorough, co. Norfolk. She is often considered to have been an illegit. da. of the Karl himself, but she m., 7 June 1623, at St. James', Clerkenwell, as " M ra Jaiue Shute," and in the mar. lie. (Fac.) she is called "da. of Edward Shute, Esq., dec* and then aged 13." She m., as her second husband, Dr. Lewis. John Ratcliffe, her » and h. by her 1st marriage, sold Attleborough in 1657 to Sir Francis Bickley, Bart. See Barrett's "Attlehorough," ISIS. ( d ) His 4 legit, children, all by his first wife, d. v.p. and s.p., viz. (1) Henry, as in the text; (2) Thomas; (3) Elizabeth, m. 20 Feb. 1607/8, at the Chapel Koyal, Whitehall, Sir John Kamaay (afterwards, 1621, Earl of Holderuesse) and d. 6 Dec. 1618; (4) Honora.
