( a ) [n 1637 he took a prominent part with the Coven- anters, by whom ho was called the " good Karl John, and was one of the leaders at the battle of Auldean in 164.1 ; P.O., for life, 1641 ; sat in I'arl. [S.] 1641, in which year he was made L. Privy Seal [S.] on the nom. of Pari. Retiring from active service, during the '•Commonwealth," lie, however, in 1650, raised 1,000 men to assist Leslie against Cromwell ; and. in 16.11, sent a regiment to Sterling, on behalf of the King. He obtained, after resignation, a navodamm of the Earldom. 21 Keb. 1662, in favour of George, his then eldest son, and his heirs male. He m. secondly, 24 Jan. 1639, Anne, 1st da. of Hugh (Fraser), Lord Lovat [S.], by Isabel, da. of Sir John Wkmyss. By her, who d. 29 July 1658, he had no issue. Herf. 1663, aged 54. He nt, at Edinburgh, 11 Aug. 1659, Jean, widow of Archibald DOUGLAS, styled. Karl OF Angus, ist da. and heir of line of David (WemTSs), 2d Earl of Wkmyss [S.], by his first wife, Jean, da. of Robert (Balfour), Lord UalfoUR of Burleigh [S.] He d. in Scotland, 1 March 1702/3, in his 70th year, and was bar. at Holyroud house. M.I. His widow d. Jan. 1715. XVI. 1703. 16. John (GORDON, afterward^) Sutherland), Earl of Sutherland [S.], only s. and h., b. about 1660 : styled Lord Strathn a v fr( ^ ) till 1703. He took an active part in support of the Revolution of 1689 ; and was in command of a reg. of infantry in Flanders, under William III., to whom and to Queen Anne (1704) he was P.C. ; he sue. to the peerage [S.], as above, i March 1702/3, taking his seat [S.] 11 July 1704, and zealously supporting the Union. He, after resignation, obtained a noiodamus(S) of the Earldom, 29 March 1706, in favour of his son and himself and the heirs male of their respective bodies, which failing, to the heirs female thereof without division, which failing to the Earl's heirs general &c. He was Rep. Peer [S.] in 4 Pails., 1707-08 and 1715-33 ; Presideut (») See p. 344, note " h " ( b ) " This was the best match in Scotland, at that time, either for means or friend- ship, or the person of the Lady, who was wise, virtuous, and comely." [Wood's "Douglas."] ( c ) His portrait, inscribed " ictatis sum 60 [50 ?] 1669 [1659 ?] " is engraved " from an original picture at Dnnrobin Castle " in Gordon's " Hist. Suth." It is half-length, in armour, with a skull cap, flowing hair and a long neck tie. His piety and his constant, church-going are commemorated in Woodrow's " Analeeta." (<*) Wood's " Douglas:' See also p. 344, note " b." (°) He " quitted the name of Gordon and resumed the old name of Sutherland." [Deirett's "Peerage," 1790, vol. ii], tho' no mention of such "quittance" is made in Wood's " Douglas," save that his grandchildren are therein called by the latter name. ( f ) In the novodamus of 24 June 1581, he is called "Joannes, Dominus Strathnaver" presumably on the supposition that a Barony of that name was vested in his father. See p. 344, note " b." ( B ) This is the last novodamus of the many which this Earldom has undergone, and it* terms, accordingly, would override all the previous ones.
