[John Bough Nichols) writes thus in the " Gent. for 1S28 : "With the title conferred, we are far from well pleased. It is Baron Tenterden of Hendon ; the former name being that of a town in Kent, the latter, that of a village in Middlesex. Baron Abbott of Tenterden, or of Hendon, Baron 7'euterden, or Baron Hendon, would any of them have been unobjectionable, but to style a town ' oj ' a village is past endurance. SVe are not prepared to say that the case is unprecedented, as probably among modern heraldic anomalies somt nearly parallel example might be found, but we hesitate not to assert that Baron London of Kotherhithe, or [Baron] Westminster of Lambeth would be no more ridiculous." ( E ) He thus describes the position and character of his parents in the modest epitaph he composed for himself—" Huniillimis sortis parentibus, patre vero prudenti, matre piu ortus."
