June 1702), by Elizabeth, da. and eventually coheir of Robert Smith (descended pattrnaUu from a family named Hovei.l), of Ashfield afsd. He was b. about 1730 at Ashfield or Braken Ash ; ed. at Seaming school ; the King's school at Canterbury, and (174S-51 ), at Caius Coll., Cambridge(»! ; Barrister (Inner Temple). 17f>4 ; King's Counsel, 1762 ; was M.P. for Tamworth, 176S-78, giving efficient support to the North ministry ; Solicitor Gen., 1770-71 ; Attorney Gen , 1771-78 ; L. Chancellor, 1778-92 (with the brief interval of from April to Dec. 1783), being raised to the peerage on appointment 3 June 1778, and receiving another peerage (with in that case a spec, rem.), on his retirement, 11 June 1792, as above mentioned, and having presided in the interval as L. High Steward at the trial (17SS), of Warren Hastings. He d. of the gout, nnm. ( a ) The "vivacity of his conduct" cut short his career there, tho' ho was not actually expelled.
