B.( h ) of John, the 2d Marquees. He (a) Lady Mary Montagu writes of her, 22 April 1742. as "an ugly girl that sticks upon his [Lord Carteret's] hands." Hor. Walpole, in 174S, mentions having met the Lord Tweeddale and " his new Marchioness," who is infinitely •' good -humoured and good company, and sang a thousand French songs very prettily " ; and. in the same year Lady Dysart- writes, "I think my sister Kanny to all appearance happily established ; the Marquis is a sensible, reasonable man and quite her lover." Lord Morton writes of her, in 1749, as " very merry and easy." She appears tohavebceu, like her mother, very musical, and, like her father, an accomplished linguist. ( b ) Under the act, 1747, for abolishing heritable jurisdictions he obtained £2,672, in full of his claim for £8,000, for the Bailiary of Dunfermline. He greatly improved bis estate of Yester by planting trees, etc. ( c ) Of ber six children, all d. before her, and all but one d. iniui. Her yst. da-, Catharine, m. Capt William Hay and had an only child, Frances, who inherited her grandmother's personalty, and m. Charles Manners, of South Witham, co. Lincoln, by whom she had issue. (<■) " A very fine boy," writes Mrs. Delany, 24 March 1753. (°) Of his three elder brothers, James, the 2d, d. young, while Major Gen. Lord Charles Hay, the 3d (who, in 1751, was of Linpluui) led the F.uglish Guards, with great gallantry, at the battle of Fontenoy, 30 April 1745, and </. nnffi, in Loudon, 1 May 17 CO. John d. young ; the second br., William Hay, an officer in the 3d Foot Guards (who, after 1770, was heir presumptive to the Tweeddale title), m. twice and d. at Yester 23 July 1781, leaving (besides a da., for whom see note "c" above) an only s. and h., George Hay, who 3. tit Yester, 28 April 1783, in early youth. His yst. br., Edward Hay (afterwards Edward Hay-Mackenzie), inherited the estate of Newhall under the will of the 6th Marquess, in 1787, aud became, subsequently, of Cromarty, his graudaughter and heir, Anne, Duchess of Sutherland, being eft in 1861, Countess of Cromarty. (B) Her name has been unsuccessfully asked after in " N. and Q.," 8th S., v. 448. Sh"e rf„ as his widow, 23 Sep. 1808 at Kdiuburgh. ( h ) The 2d s., Brig. Gen.
