As early as 1520 he invaded the English Pale, and, tho' in 1624 he carried the Sword of State at the installation of his Kiin-man, 'he Karl of Kildare, as Chief Governor [I j was in constant, warfare with the Engliab, till he was finally crushed in 1341, when he renounced the style of " Tin. I<ot.] ( d ) Shane O'Neill ("the Proud "). the eldest legit, b. by the 1st wife, was apparently not 4. till about 1530. and w as probably passed over on account of his youth. He after- wards headed the Irish party against his father (whose Submission to the Knglish was considered degrading) and Lis brother Matthew. This was " the O'Neill " (for he took upon him that designation), whose appearance in London, 4 Jan. 1501 '2, excited such sensation, and whose turbulent career waa ended by assassination, 2 June 1567, at the hands of the MucDouuells.
