In his will, pr. 24 Jan. 1793, he desires his right hand to be cut off and sent to his s., Lord Audley, to " remind him of his duty to God, after having so long abandoned the duty he owed to a father, who once affectionately loved him." He appears, however, to have been a vile rascal, and to have swindled his s., to annoy whom he put up this notice on a board at Bath : — " Boots and shoes mended, carpets beat iffc, by P. Thicknesse, father of Lord Audley. " See Historic Houses in Bath. V.G. (') She m. 10 May 1749, and d. (30 years before her husband) 28 Mar. 1762. f ) " Have you heard Lady Audley 's first husband Mr. Moorhouse is risen from the dead, and returned to claim his wife, or at least his money ? and as Lord A. married her for that, probably he will beg leave to part with both at once. Instead of being killed in the E. Indies he was taken prisoner, and has been exchanged, or made his escape lately. At least this is the story. I do not vouch for the truth of a single syllable of it. (M.J.Holroyd, letter of 11 Dec. 1795.) No confirmation of this " Enoch Arden " tale has been discovered. V.G.
