John Berkeley, 5th and yst. s.^") of Sir Maurice T ^ „ B., of Bruton, Somerset, by Elizabeth, da. of Sir Henry ^ ' Killigrew, of Hanworth, Midx., was I/ap. at Hanworth, I Feb. 1606/7, and matric. at Oxford (Queen's Coll.) 14 Feb. 1622/3. Ambassador to Christina, Queen of Sweden, Jan. 1636/7. Being a Commander in the Army against the Scots, he was knighted by the King at Berwick, 27 July 1639. M.P. for Heytesbury in the Short Pari., Apr. i640.() During the rebellion he was one of the most eminent officers of the Royal party; in 1642 (as Commissary Gen.) he secured nearly the whole of Cornwall ; and being in joint command with Sir Ralph Hopton, (subsequently he was Gen. of all the Royal forces in Devon) he won divers battles against the insurgents at Bradock, Saltash, Launceston, Stratton, and Modbury, investing and reducing Exeter, of which he was made Governor, being holder of that office during the time of the Queen's giving birth there to the Princess Henrietta Maria. This city he afterwards (13 Apr. 1645) was forced to surrender, on honourable terms, to Fairfax.
