APPENDIX D 615 NON-HEREDITARY GREAT OFFICES As to the dates of appointment, where it is possible after 1665 the date of the Gazette has been given; in connection with offices there are three dates any one of which may be given with almost equal propriety, viz. (i) when a man accepted office (2) when he was gazetted (3) when the patent creating him issued. Where the termination of the office is not stated, it may be concluded that — except in the early period — it was held until the date of the next appointment given in the list.
