It will be noticed that the Lords bore an honourable and heavy share of the load of suffering, loss, and danger, which was entailed on the nation at that epoch in the effort to maintain our South African Empire, an effort made necessary in the main by the vacillating and pusillanimous conduct of our statesmen in the past.
