(c) We have seen in the entry on the Close Roll quoted on p. 660 that Isabel, Countess of Devon, is stated by the King to have received the third penny of that county — " which fee Isabella and her ancestors received yearly by the hands of the sheriff of Devon." (^) Thomas, Earl of Warwick, d. s.p., 26 June 1242. His only sister, Margery, was then wife of John Marshal, who had seisin of Warwick Castle 3 Oct. 1242, and d. s.p., the same month.
