Family PLOCEIDÆ.

The intrinsic muscles of the syrinx fixed to the ends of the bronchial semi-rings; the edges of both mandibles perfectly smooth ; the hinder part of the tarsus longitudinally bilaininated, the laminae entire and smooth; wing with ten primaries, the first notably small ; nostrils pierced within the line of the forehead or closely outside it, the space between the nostril and the edge of the mandible greater than the space between the nostril and the cuhrien ; bill conical and entire, the notch being absent or obsolete.
