CHAP. XLI.

Leuiathan is further described by the peculiar parts of his bodie, and terrible composition of al his members.

NOT as [1] cruel wil I raise him: for who can resist my countenance? 2Who hath giuen me before, that I may render vnto him? Al things that are vnder heauen be myne. 3I wil not spare him, and his mightie words, and framed to beseech. 4Who shal reueale the face of his garment: and who shal enter into the middes of his mouth? 5Who shal open the gate of his countenance? dread is round about his teeth. 6His bodie as shildes that are cast, compact with skales fast cleauing together. 7One is ioyned to an other, and not so much as anie ayre entereth between them: 8One shal sticke to an other, and holding ech other, they shal not be separated. 9His sneesing is as the shining of fire, and his eies as the twinklings of the morning. 10Out of his mouth proceede lamps, as it were torches of lighted fire. 11Out of his nosthrels proceedeth smoke, as it were of a pot heated and boyling. 12His breath maketh coales to burne, & a flame commeth forth out of his mouth. 13In his necke shal strength abide, and needines goeth before his face. 14The members of his flesh cleaue together one to an other: [2] he shal send lightnings against him, and he shal not be caried to an other place. 15His hart shal be hardned as a stone, and shal be stifly compact as the smithes stithie. 16When he shal be taken away, the [3] Angels shal feare, and being feared shal be purged. 17When the sword shal apprehend him, neither speare, nor brest-plate shal be able to abide. 18For he shal esteeme yron as chaffe, & brasse, as rotten wood. 19The bow-man shal not put him to flight, the stones of the sling, to him are turned into stubble. 20As stubble wil he esteeme the hammer, and he wil laugh him to skorne that shaketh the speare. 21The beames of the sunne shal be vnder him, & he shal strew gold vnder him as durt. 22He shal make the deepe sea to boyle as a pot, and shal put it as when ointments boyle. 23A path shal shine after him, he shal esteeme the depth as waxing old. 24There is no power vpon the earth, that may be compared with him, who is made to feare no man. 25He seeth euerie high thing, he is [4] King ouer al the children of pryde.

  3. Angels with reuerent feare doe honour Gods power. And valient mariners and other soldiers are terrified when they see this so huge a fish. Mystically, Gods preachers & perfectest seruants shal naturally feare the terrour of Gods iudgement.
