buttocks. This was resented violently at the time, but nevertheless was repressed into the unconscious with a lustful tone, which still expressed itself in a flagellation complex.

These individual examples show clearly that all such apparently idle fancies as artistic predilections have definite causal foundations, and are determined by individual unconscious factors. The old adage De gustibus non est disputandum thus finds its appropriate psychic interpretation.
