.ifill. 11. 10, FIRST "PARLIAMENT. XV of "December. if6 7 . 181 ii. Of the Sacramentes. S The Fatheris under the Law , befides the veritie of the Sacrifices, had twa chiefe Sacramentes , to ce wit, Ciraimcifion, and the Pane- over, the defpifers and contemners whereof , were not reputed of l^ 13 ' 11 ' 3j Gods people : la do we acknawledge and confefle , that we now in the time of the Evangell , have twa chiefe ^ ' 7 - 4 - Sacramentes, onclie inflituted be the Lord jefus , & commanded to be ufed of all they, that will be reputed ^t.il'.il'. members of his body : To wit, Baptifme, and the fupper or Table of die Lord Jefus, called the Commu- mx'.ll'zl' nioa of his body and blude. And thir Sacramentes alfweiil of auld , as of new Teftament , how inflituted fvk It ".' of God , not oneiie to make ane vifible difference , betwixt his people , and they that wes without his league : ^-'H^f bot alfo to exerce the faith oi his Children , and be participation oi the fame Sacramentes , to feill in their hearts the aflurance of his promife, and of that mod blefled conjunction , uniori and focietie , quhilk the elect have with their head Chrift jefus. And this wee utterlie damne the vanitie of they, that affirme Sacra- Eom.«. 3>4 ; mentes to be nathing elfe bot naked and baire fignes. f No, wee affuredlie beleeve , that be Baptifme, we£ a!j . 2 ar ingrafted in Chrift Jefus , to be made partakers of his Juftice , be quhilk our finnes ar covered and remitted. And alfwa , that in the Supper richtlie ufed , CHRIST J E S U S is fo joyned widi us, that hee becummis very nurifhment and fade of our faules. Not thafc we magine anie trartfubftantiation oi Bread into Chriftcs bo- dy , and oi Wine into his natural! blude , as the Papiftes have permciouflie taucht , and damnabiie beleeved : bot this unioun and conjunction , quhilk we have with the body and blude of Chrift Jefus in the richt ufe of the Sacrameats , wrochtbeoperatiounofthehaly Ghaift, who by trew faith caryis us above all things that are vifible, carnall, and earthly, and makes us to feede upon the body and blude of Chrift Jefus, quhilk wes awes broken and fhed for us , quhilk now is in heaven , and appeans in the prefence of his Father for us ; And zit notwith (landing the far diftance of place , quhilkis betwixt his body , now glorified in Heaven , and M " '«• "- and us now mortal! in this earth : zit we man afluredlie beleeve , that the bread quhilk we break , is the com- ABi.'i.ti s *' munion of Chriftes bodie, and the cupe quhilk we bleffe , is the communion of his blude. So that we con- fcotio" fefle , and ifhdoubtedlie believe , that the faithfull in the richt ufe of the Lords Table , do fo eat the bodie and drinke the blude of the Lord Jefus , that lie remaines in them , and they in him. Zea, they are fo maid flefh of his flefh , and bone of his bones , that as the eternall God-head lies given to the fleih of Chrift Jefus (quhilk £& ^!"'o oi the awin conditioun and nature wes mortall and corruptible) hie and immortalitie : fo dois Chrift Jelus his %£ s - "■ fleih and blude eatin and drunkin be us, give unto us the fame prerogatives. Quhilk albeit we confefle, ar M-u'io.] nether given unto us at that time oneiie , nether zit be the proper power and vertue of the Sacrament oneiie : °£ $?,)'£'?' zit we afErrne that the faithfull , in the richt ufe of the Lords fable, lies conjunftioun with Chrift Jefus : as S7,58,J the naturall man cannot apprehend: zea, and iarther wee affirme, that albeit the faithfull oppreffed be ne- gligence, andnamelieinfirmitie, dois not profite famejkle , astheywald, in the verie inftant action of the Supper: zit fall it after bring frutefurdi, as liveliefeidfawin in gude ground: For the haly Spirit , quhilk can never be divided fra the richt inftitutioun of the Lord Jefus , will not fruftrat the faithfull of the fruit of that myilicall action , bet all thir we fay cummis of trew faith, quhilk apprehendis Chrift Jefus; who only ' makis this Sacrament effectuall unto us. And therefore wholoeverfclanders us, as that we affirme or be- levis Sacraments to be naked and bair Signes , do injurie unto us , and fpeaks again ft the manifeft truth. Bot this liberate and franklie wee confefle, that we make ane diftinctioun betwixt Chrift Jefus in his eternall fubftan ce , and betwixt rhe Elements of the Sacramentall Signes. So that wee will nether worihip the Signes, in place of that quhilk is fignified be them , nether zit doe we defpife and interpret them , as unprofitable and ' z f°' * '• vaine, bot do ufe them with all reverence, examining our felves diligentlie , before that fo we do. Became we are aiTu'red be the mouth of the Apoftle , that fik as eat of that bread , and drink of that cupe unworthelie, are guiltie of the bodie and blude of Chrift Jefus. x 3- Of the richt adm'miftration of the Sacraments. THAT Sacraments be richtlie miniftrat, we Judge twa things requifite: The ane, that they be mini- ftrat be lauchfull Minifters , whom we affirme to be only they , diat ar appoynted to the preaching of rhe word , into quhais mouthes God lies put fum Sermon of exhortation , they being men lauchfullie chofen thereto be fum Kirk. Theuther, that they be miniftrat in fik elements , and in fik fort, as God lies' appoynted, elfe we affirme that they ceafe to be the richt Sacraments of Chrift Jefus. And therefore it is, that we fly the doctrine of the Papifticall Kirk , in participation of their Sacraments : firft, becaufe their Mi- nifters arena Minifters of Chrift Jefus, zea (quhilk is mair horrible) they fufferwemen, whome the haly Ghaitt will not fufrer to teache in the Congregatioun , to Baptize ; and fecundly , becaufe diey have fo adui* terated both the one Sacrament and theuther, with their awin inventions, that no part of Chrifts action abydes in the original! puritie. For Oyle, Salt, Spittil , and fik-lyke in Baptifme , ar bot mennis inventiouns. Adoration , Veneration bearing throw ftreitis and townes , and keiping of bread in boxes or buiftes , ar pro- phanatioun of Chrifts Sacraments, and na ufe of the fame. For Chrift Jefus faide , Take, eat&c. do ti^; lt - iS ; thisinrememberanceofme. Be quhilk word and charge , he fanctified bread and wine, to the Sacrament «"■»♦■»>' of his halie bodie and blude , to the end, that the ane fuld be eaten , and that all fuld drinke of theuther, and ^v.ii. i<>; not that thay fuld be keiped to be wbrlhipped and honoured, as God, as the Papiftes have done heirto- tc.01.uS4: fore. Who alfo committed Sacrilege, fteilling from the people the ane parte of the Sacrament, to wit, the E e bteffed
