Seeing Ferdinand was going to speak, he continued, "Hear my proposals: If retirement is your choice, go with me to Suabia; if you prefer an active life, I will either accompany you to the army, or I will travel with you wherever you please; the instant I hear how my affairs stand, you shall be independent, and then your home shall be mine, and your choice of situation shall meet my approbation, whatever it may be: Thus you will make my life valuable if you consent; but your refusal will cloud my hopes and prospects for ever.
