PLATE LIII

The Death of Aktaion

Artemis, carrying a quiver on her back and wearing a fawn-skin over her shoulders and breast, braces herself to draw her bow as she places an arrow on the string. Before her Aktaion is falling to the ground overpowered by his four maddened dogs, which leap upon him and tear his flesh. From a red-figured krater of the fifth century b.c. (Furtwängler-Reichhold, Griechische Vasenmalerei, No. 115). See p. 252.
