PLATE XXXVIII

Tahmūrath Combats the Demons

The hero, mounted on his charger and swinging his mace (a characteristic Persian weapon), struggles with four demons, whose forms are a combination of human and animal shapes. A touch of Chinese influence is discernible in the two human figures. From a Persian manuscript of the Shāhnāmah, dated 1605-08 a.d., now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
