when she heard, riseth quickely & commeth to him. 30For Jesus was not yet come into the towne: but he was yet in that place where Martha had met him. 31The Jewes therfore that were with her in the house and did comfort her, when they saw Marie that she rose quickly and went forth, folowed her, saying: That she goeth to the grave, to weepe there. 32Marie therfore when she was come where Jesus was, seeing him, fel at his feete, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 33Jesus therfore when he saw her weeping, and the Jewes that were come with her, weeping, he groned in spirit, and troubled himself, 34and said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see. 35And Jesus wept. 36The Jewes therfore said: Behold how he loved him. 37But certaine of them said: Could not he that Jo. 9, 6.* opened the eyes of the blind man, make that this man should not die? 38Jesus therfore againe groning in himself, commeth to the grave: and it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it. 39Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, now he stinketh, for he is now of foure dayes. 40Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou beleeve, thou shalt see the glorie of God? 41They tooke therfore the stone away. And Jesus lifting his eyes upward, said: Father, I give thee thankes that thou hast heard me. 42And I did know that thou doest alwayes heare me, but for the people that standeth about, have I said it, that they may beleeve that thou hast sent me. 43When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth. 44And forthwith he came forth that had been dead, bound feete and handes with winding bandes, and his face was tied with a napkin. Jesus said to them: [1] Loose him, and let him goe.
45Many therfore of the Jewes that were come to Marie and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, beleeved in him.✠ 46And certaine of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus did. The Ghospel upon friday in Passion weeke.47The cheefe priests therfore and the pharisees gathered a Councel, and said: What doe we, for this man doeth many signes. 48If we let him alone so, al wil beleeve in him: and the Romanes wil come, and [2] take away our place and Nation. 49But one of them named Caiphas, being the high Priest of that yeare, said to them: You know nothing, 50neither doe you consider: that it is expedient for us that one man die for the people, and the whole Nation perish not. 51And this he said not of himself: but ″ being the high Priest of that yeare, he prophecied that Jesus should die for the Nation. 52And not only for the Nation, but to gather into one the children of God that were dispersed. 53From that day therfore they devised to kil him. 54Jesus therfore walked no more openly among the Jewes, but he went into the countrie beside the desert unto a citie that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his Disciples.✠
55And the Pasche of the Jewes was at hand: and many of the countrie went up to Hierusalem before the Pasche to sanctifie themselves. 56They sought Jesus therfore; and they communed one with another, standing in the Temple: What
