This is one of the few families of Saxon origin in which the property descended from father to son for more than seven hundred years, and in Domesday Book, Bernard de Croft held the Croft estate in Herefordshire, which was sold about the year 1760. During seven centuries, from 1297 to 1874, members of the Croft family liave represented the county of Hereford or the borough of Leominster in Parliament. SIR RICHARD CROFT (descended from Sir Hugh de Croft, lord of Croft, K.B. 33 EDWARD I. knight of the shire co. Hereford, 1315), a zealous Yorkist, at the battle of Tewkesbm-y took the Prince of Wales prisoner, sheriff co. Hereford lOtli, and knight of the shire 17 EDWARD IV. treasm-er of the King's household, hon. knight banneret at Stoke 1487, steward of the household to Prince Arthur 1502, and d. 1509. His great-gi-andson , SIR JAMES CROFT, governor of Haddington and lord deputy of Ireland 1551, deputy constable of the tower 1552, governor of Berwick 1659, comptroller of the household and P.c. 1570, knight of the shu-e co. Hereford 5, 13, 28, 29, 30, and 35 Elizabeth, &c. &c.; died 1591. His grandson, SIR HERBERT CROFT (son of Edward, M.P. Leominster 1571 and 1586), M.P. co. Hereford, temp. Q. ELIZABETH and James I., knighted at Theobalds 1603, became a lay brother at Douay, and died there 10 April, 1622, having m. Mary, dau. and sole heir of Sir Ajithouy Bourne, of Holt Castle, co. Anne, dau. of Very Rev. Jonathan Browne, D.D. dean of Hereford, and had a son, SIR HERBERT CROFT, created a Baroxet 18 Nov. 1671, M.P. CO. Hereford 1678; d. 3 Nov. 1720, having m. Eliza- beth, dau. of Tliomas Archer, of Umberslade, co. Wai'wick, and aunt of Thomas, 1st Lord Archer; she d. 1709. His great- grandson, SIR RICHARD CROFT, 6th Baronet (on the death of his brother Sir Herbert in 1816), M.D.; b. 9 Jan. 1762; d. 13 Feb. 1818, having m. 3 Nov. 1789, Margaret, dau. of Thomas Denman, M.D. and sister of Thomas, 1st Lord Denman ; she d. 24 Sept. 1847, having had 3 sons and a dau. (1) Sir Thomas Elmsley, 7th Baronet, F.s.A. b. 2 Sept. 1798; d. 29 Oct. 1835, having m. 9 Sept. 1824, Sophia Jane Lateward, only child of Richard Lateward-Lateward, Esq. of Grove House, Middx (she re-m. 7 Nov. 1835, Col. William Lyster), and had an only dau. Grace, m. 5 Mar. 1846, to Capt. Edward Murray, 3rd Middx. militia, and has 3 sons, Edward Croft Murray, 9th regt. — Denman, 6th regt. — Bernard.
