SIR ALEXA>rDER GIBSON, son of George Gibson, of Goldingstones, a clerk of session (descended from Thomas Gibson, temp. James TV. named with several other barons of Flfeshire — of this family was William Gibson, dean of Restalrig, an original senator of the court), bred to the law and acquired a fortune; on account of his extensive knowledge of the laws of his own and foreign countries he was personally presented to the ofBce of one of the principal clerks of session by James VI. and had several considerable charters of lands, &c. Lord Durie of Session 10 July, 1621, and subsequently president of the court, created a Baroxet of Nova Scotia (and had a grant of lands in that country of 6 miles in length and Sin breadth! !) to him and his male heirs, by charter dated 22 Feb. 1628, commissioner of laws 1633, &c. ; d. 10 June, 1644, having m. Margaret, dau. of Sir Thomas Craig, of Riccarton, lord advocate of Scotland, by whom he had with other issue 2 sons, [1] Sir Alexander, 2nd Baronet, a clerk of session 1632, com- mi»ary-gen. of the forces opposed to Charles I. 1640, lord clerk register 1641, knighted 15 Mar. 1641, sen. coll. justice as Lord Durie; d. June, 1656, and whose line failed on the death of his grandson. Sir Alexander, 4th Baronet, M j". Flfeshire, 6 Aug. 1661, aged 32. [2] Sir John Gibson, of Pentland, was a zealous royalist, attended Charles I. in his varied fortunes, and Charles II. created him knight banneret at the battle of "Worcester 1651, where he lost a leg ; he m. 1st, Margaret Hay, of the Kinnoul family, and had 2 sons, (t) (t) Sir John m. 2ndly, the widow of Sir James Fleming; and Srdly, Elizabeth, youngest dau. of Sir Thomas Thomson, Bart, and had a son, [3] Sir Thomas, of Keir Hill, created a Baronet of NOVA Scotia 31 Dec. 1702, with remainder to his heirs male ; m. Jean, only child of Edward Marjoribanks, Esq. of Hallyards, N.B. (1) Sir Alexander, of whom immediately. (2) Sir John, col. of a regt. of foot, and governor of Ports- mouth. SIR ALEXANDER GIBSON, of Pentland and Adiston, one of the principal clerks of session and clerk to the privy council of Scotland; m. Helen, dau. of Sir James Fleeming, of RathobjTes, co. Midlothian, and had with other issue 2 sons, [1] Sir John, of Pentland, 5tll Baronet (on the death of his 2nd cousin Sir Alexander), and his hne failed on the death of his grandson Sir Robert, 8th Baronet. [2] Alexander, of Durie, one of the principal clerks of session, m. 1st, Elizabeth, dau. of Sir John (V James) Foulis, of Havelston, and had 3 sons ; he m. 2ndly widow of Col. Hamilton, of Fala, and had a son and 2 daus. His eldest son, JOHN GIBSON, of Durie, d. 18 Jan. 1767, having m. Helen, dau. of Hon. William Carmichael, of Skirling (E. Hyxd- FORD, ext. — by his 1st ^rife Helen, only child of Thomas Craig, of Riccarton); she d. 2 June, 1787, having had with 2 daus. 3 sons, [1] Alexander, of whom presently. [2] WiUiam, of Edinburgh, merchant, whose son James Gibson- Craig, was created a Baronet 30 Sept. 1831. (See next article.) [3] Thomas, lieut.-col. 89th foot. ALEXANDER GIBSON, of Durie, advocate ; d. 13 May, 1785, having m. 19 Oct. 1770, Margaret Bruce, 3rd dau. of Thomas Dundas, of Fingask (E. Zetland) ; she d. 22 Dec. 1774, leaving 2 sons, (1) Sir John Gibson-Carmichael, of Skirling, 9th Baronet, assumed, in conformity ■with an entail of Lord Hyndford in 1787, the surname and arms of Carmichael ; b. 24 April, 1773, d. 7 Nov. 1803, having m. 15 Oct. 1799, Janet Hj-ndford, dau. of Cornelius Elliott, of Wolfelee, Roxburghs. clerk "to the signet ; she d. 23 Aug. 1825, having (re-m. 31 July, 1806, to John, 12th Baron Elphiustone, who d. 21 May, 1813, leaving a son) had an only dau. — Eleanor, m. , 1828, to Alexander Begbie, Esq. who d. s. p. 18 June, 1860. (2) Sir Thomas Gibson-Carmichael, 10th Baronet, capt. 58th regt.; b. 21 Dec. 1774; d. 13 Dec. 1849, having m. 1st— 7 Feb. 1806, Janet Maitland, dau. of Major-Gen. Thomas Dundas, of Fingask (E. Zetland) ; she d. 7 June, 1814, having had with other issue a son and dau. [1] Sir Alexander Gibson-Carmichael, 11th Baronet, b. 6 June 1812; d. s.p. 8 May, 1850. [2] Eleanor Hyndford, d. 15 Oct. 1849, having m. 5 June, 1829, to Sir David Kinloch, Bart, who d. 23 Feb. 1879. Sir Thomas m. 2ndly— 13 June, 1816, Hon. Anne, dau. of Frances, 7th Lord Napier; she d. 7 Dec. 1862, having had with other issue 2 sons and 2 daus. [3] Sir Thomas, 12th Baronet, com. R.N. b. 27 Oct. 1817; d. s.p. 30 Dec. 1855, having m. 17 Oct. 1849, Frances Marianne, dau. of Rev. Joseph Story, of Bingfield, co. Cavan. [4] Sir 'William Henry, 13th and present Baronet. [5] Maria Clavering, d. 20 April, 1853, having m 15 June, 1852, to Sir James Philip Lacaita, K.C.M.G. (1861), naturalized 1855, member of Italian parliament 1861, 5, k.R. of Brazil, and had a son.
