DAVID KINLOCH (grandson of George Kinloch, of that ilk, and of Cruvy, co. Fife), bred a physician, and when in Spain was imprisoned by the Inquisition, and was liberated in consequence of having performed a successful cure upon the Inquisitor-general, purchased the lands and barony of Aber- bothry, and acquired also the lands of Balmyle, Perths. which was afterwards called Kinloch ; m. Grizel, dau. of Hay, of Gourdy, of the Errol family, and d. 1617, having had 2 sons, (1) James, of whom presently. (2) John, of Little Gourdie, Perths.; m. dau. of Sir Gilbert Bamsay, of Balmain, and from him is said to descend David James kinloch, of GourtUe, J.P. col. in the army (retd.), formerly Bombay art. TAMES KINLOCH, of Aberbothry; m. dau. of Graham of Fintray, now Linlathin. co. Forfar, and had 2 sons, (1) Sir David, created a Baronet op Nova Scotia 5 Sept. 1685, by James Vll. with remainder to his heirs male ; m. 1st, Elizabeth, only child of David, 2ud son of John Bethune, of Balfour, Fifes.; she d. s. p. and he m. 2udly, his cousin Margaret Graham, of Fiutrav. His grandson, SiK James, 3rd Baronet, joined the rebellion of 1745, was tried and condemned to death ; he escaped to France and was subsequently pardoned; his estates were forfeited and re- purchased by his relatives for his son William who d. s. p. hav- ing sold them to Capt. George Oliphant Kinloch (see below). (2) James, of Kilrie, Forfarshire, physician, m. Cecilia, dau. of Thomas Fotheringham, of Povrie, and had 2 sons, [1] David, of Kilrie, m. Isabel, 2nd dau. of George Oliphant, of Clashbenie, and had a son — John. [2] John, physician, m. Jean, eldest dau. and sole heir of George Oliphant, of Clashbenie, and had with other issue a son, Capt. George Oliphant Kinloch, of Rosemount, purchased the family estates from his cousin WilUam Kinloch aforesaid ; m. Ann, dau. of John Balneavis, of Cambaddie, M.P. Dundee in the first reformed parliament, and had a younger son, viz.— George Kinloch, M.P. Dundee in first reformed parlia- ment; d. 28 Mar. 1833, aged 58, having m. his cousin Helen, 3rd dau. of John Smyth, of Balhary, and had with other issue, all deceased, an only surviving son, viz. — SIR GEORGE KINLOCH, of Kinloch, co. Perth, J.P. D.L. advocate, created a BARONET 16 April, 1873; b. 13 Oct. 1800; d. 17 June, 1881, having m. 21 Oct. 1845, Margaret, only child of George Canning, Esq. of Arbroath, co. Forfar, J.P. and had 3 sons ami 5 dans. (1) Sir John George Smyth, 2nd and present Baronet. (2) George Washington Andrew, of Balhary; b. 30 Nov. 1853. (3) Robert Ale.xander George, b. 10 July, 1855. (4) Marjory Gcorgina Jane. (5) Elena Cecilia Ann. (6) Margaret Aiinre, m. 29 April, 1873, to William Joseph Starkey Barber-Starkey, Esq. D.A. only son of Rev. William Henry Barber, M.A. and has a son and 4 daus. William Joe H. Barber-Starkey, b. 4 Mar. 1880.— Mar- garet Sarah Mary Josephine. — Georgina Blanche. — ^Aimee Josephine.— A dau. b. 23 May. 1881. Dumfries" (1685, N.8.), a clerk in the admiralty ; s. his brother as 8th Baronet in 1880 ; b. 22 Mar. 1841 ; m. 24 April, 1872, Mary Steward, younger dau. of Charles John Feamley, Esq. of Peckham, Surrey, and has 3 sons and 2 daus. (1) Charles Sharpe, b. 26 Feb. 1874. (2) Harry Fearnley, b. 8 Jan. 1876. (3) Yvone, b. 18 Feb. 1879. (4) Josephine Mary, b. 4 Feb. 1873. (5) Margaret Hope, b. 17 Feb. 1878. ROGER KIRKPATRICK, of Closebum (descended from Ivone, son of William Kirkpatrick, of Closebume 1232), commissioner of the West Borders 1466 ; m. Margaret, dau. of Thomas, 1st Lord Somerville, by Janet, dau. of Alexander Stewart (ancestor of JAMES VL), Lord Damley (she re-m. to Thomas Ker, of Ferniehurst, ancestor of the Marquis of Lothian), and had 2 sons, /I / Sir Thomas, keeper of Lochmaben Castle, sat in the Scotch Parliament 1487; d. 1502, having m. Maria, dau. of Herbert 2nd Lord Maxwell and was ancestor of Sir Thomas, created a Baronet. /2/ Ale.xander, of Kirkmichael, which Barony he obtained as a reward for taking prisoner at the battle of Burnswark, James, 9th and last Earl of Douglas 1484, and was ancestor of WILLIAM Kirkpatrick, English consul at Malaga; b. 24 Mar. 1764; m. Fanny, dau. of Baron Grivegn6e, of Malaga, and had 3 daus. (1) Charlotte, m. to her cousin Thomas, son of John Kirk- patrick. (2) Harriet, m. to the Count dc Cabarras. (3) Mary Manuela, d. 22 Nov. 1879, aged 86, having m. to Count de Montijo, a grandee of Spain of the 1st class, col. of artillery under the French standard in the Peninsular war, lost an eye at Salamanca; d. 1839, having had 2 daus. [1] m. to Duke of Alba and Berwick, in Spain. [2] Eug('nie, Countess of Ti;>ba, Empress of the French; b. at Grenada 5 May 1826; ni. at Notre Dame, 29 Jan. 1853, to Charles Louis Napoleon III. of France; b. 20 April, 1808 ; d. at Chislehurst. 9 Jan. 1873, having had an only son, Napoleon Eugene Louis Jean Joseph, b. 16 Mar! 1856; fell in Zululand 1880. SIR THOMAS KIRKPATRICK, of Closeburne, lieut.-col. Dumfriessh. militia 1691 ; sat for Dumfriessh. in the Scotch parliament; created a Baronet of Nova Scotia, 26 Mar. 1685, with remainder to his heirs male ; m. 1st (contract dated)— 25 April, 1666, Hon. Isabel Sandiland, dau. of John, Lord Torpichen; and 2ndly (contract dated 7 Dec. 1672) — Sarah, dau. of Robert Fergusson, Esq. of Craigdarroch ; and 3rdly — 1686, Grizel, dau. of Gavin Hamilton, Esq. of Raploch, and widow of Inglis of Murdiestown. His descendant in the 6th generation.
