SIR JAMES MAXWELL, 9th of Calderwood, co. Lanark (elder brother of Robert, great-grandfather of John, created Baron FARNHAM, see that title), sheriff depute Lanarkshire, 1607, d. Sept. 1622, having m. 1st — Helena, dau. of John Por- terfield, Esq. of Porterfield, co. Renfrew; she d. Aug. 1573, having had 2 daus. He m. 2ndly (marriage contract 12 Feb. 1579) Isabel, dau. of Sir Alexander Hamilton, of Innerwick, and had with 6 daus. 3 sons, of whom the second, (1) Sir James, created a Baronet of Nova Scotia 18 Mar. 1627, with remainder to his heirs male whatsoever ; died after 1670, having m. 1st, Jean, dau. of Sir James Hamil- ton, of Evandale, and had an only dau. He m. 2ndly, (mar- riage contract 1 July, 1637) Mary Coutts, by whom he had a son, Sir William, 2nd Baronet; d. 30 April, 1703, having m. before 9 Nov. 1666, his cousin Jean, dau. and coheir of Sir Alexander Maxwell, of Saughton Hall, and had 2 sons who both predeceased him. SIR JAMES m. 3rdly— 8 Sept. 1610, Lady Margaret Cuning- hame, dau. of James, 7th Earl of Glencairn (ext.), relict of Sir James Hamilton, of Evandale (her will dated 2 Oct. 1622), and had with 4 daus. 2 sons, of whom the elder, (2) John, col. in the Irish army, supported the royal cause in Scotland, and was slain at the battle of Dunbar 1650; m. Elizabeth, dau. of James Elphinstone, of Blythswood, and had an only son. Sir John, 3rd Baronet, m. Margaret, dau. of Capt. Wood, of Coltiure, and was father of SIR WILLIAM, 4th Baronet, d. 1750, having m. Christian, dau. of Alexander Stewart, of Torrance, Esq. and had with 4 daus. 3 sons, (1) Sir William, 5th Baronet, d. 2 Jan. 1789, having m. Grizel, dau. of James Peadie, Esq. of Rough Hill, and had with 4 daus. 2 sons, of whom the only survivor, Sir William, 6th Baronet (elder son), d. s. p. 12 Aug. 1829, having m. 1807, Hannah Leonora, dau. of Robert Pasley, of Mount Annan ; she d. 19 Jidy, 1857. (2) John, col. comdg. a regt. of grenadiers in Gennan war, under Prince Ferdinand. (3) Alexander, of Leith, merchant, m. Mary, dau. of Hugh Clerk, of Edinburgh, merchant (BART.), and had 'ith 3 daus. 4 sons, of whom the only survivor. SIR WILLIAM, 7th Baronet, a general in the army, taken prisoner at Saratoga and Yorktown ; b. 4 Dec. 1754 ; d. 16 Mar. 1837, having m. 1 July, 1792, Isabella, dau. and heir of Henry Wilson, Esq. of Newbottle, co. Durham ; she d. 1 Oct. 1829, having had with other issue 2 sons, (1) Sir William Alexander, 8th Baronet, col. in the army; b. 30 April, 1793; d. s. p. 4 April, 1865, having m. 15 June, 1847, Catherine Cameron, 5th dau. of late Walter Logan, Esq. of Fingalton, co. Lanark, and widow of Henry Paget Gill, capt. 50th regt.; she d. 13 Oct. 1866. (2) Sir Hugh Bates, Qth Baronet, [d.l.; b. 14 Feb. 1797; d. 9 Feb. 1870, having m. 1 May, 1827, Mary Anne Barbara, only surviving dau. of John Hunter, Esq. of Lisburne, co. (1681, N.S.), M.P. Wig- townshire 1880, capt. royal Ayrs. militia ; s. his father as 7th Baro- net in 1877 ; b. 8 Jan. 1845; m. 20 Jan. 1869, Mary, eldest dau. of Henry Fletcher Camp- bell, Esq. of Boquhan, CO Stirling, and has 2 sons and 3 daus. (1) WilUam, b. 29 Sept. 1869. (2) Aymer Edward, b. 26 Oct. 1877. (4) Winifred Edith. (3) Ann Christian. (5) Beatrice Mary. Wigton (de- scended from Sir Edward Maxwell, of Tinwald, who ac- quired Monreith 1481/2, and who was descended from Sir Herbert Maxwell, ancestor of the attainted Earl of Nithsdale — see EARL Far>'HAM), knighted before 4 M.ir. 1680, created a Baronet of nova Scotia in the lifetime of his father, 8 Jan. 1681. ^rith remainder to his heirs male. His son, SIR ALEXANDER, 2nd Baronet, m. 29 Dec. 1711, Lady Jean Montgomery, dau. of Alexander, 9th Earl of Eglin- ton ; she d. 20 Feb. 1745, having had with 4 daus. 3 sons, /I/ Sir Alexander (or WilUam), 3rd Baronet, d. 22 Aug. 1771, having m.
