retreat of their forces from the province of Pegu, the Talaings with one voice implored to be taken under British protection to escape the tyrannical government of the Burmese; and this, in conjunction with other reasons, mainly brought about the determination of Lord Daihousie to annex their province. They have proved grateful and faithful, and the improvement and progress of Pegu have been almost unparalleled.
