been compelled to defend my priority[1] against the pretensions of Mr. Griffith, and must very earnestly protest against the allegations that Mr. Griffith has in any way contributed to a better understanding of that papyrus." For a telling reply to this see Griffith (1892), p. 414.

Griffith, F. L., "Note on Egyptian weights and measures," Proceedings of the Society of Biblical Archaeology, vol. 14, 1892, pp. 403-450; vol. 15, 1893, pp. 3o1~315.

Many references to Eisenlohr. There are 44 problems in the Rhind papyrus where references are made to weights or measures. Griffith considers all of these. Quotation from Feet (1923, 2), p. 24: "Though weights and measures form in some sense an essential portion of mathematics no attempt to treat them has been made in this volume, which could be vastly increased in size by such a discussion. An even better reason for the abstention is the fact that the subject has been already admirably dealt with in an epoch-making article by Griffith [a reference is then given to the above article]. Despite the writer's modest disclaimer of finality there is practically nothing to be added to this treatment which was based on a careful reading of all previous work on the subject backed by what is more important, a first-hand acquaintance with the Egyptian texts."

Conjectures as to the method of resolving fractions in the Rhind papyrus.

Bordchardt, L., "Wie wurden die Boschungen der Pyramiden bestimmt?" Zeitschrift für Ägyptische Sprache . . . ,vol. 31, 1893, pp. 9-17.

In opposition to Eisenlohr (I877), Petrie (1383), and Cantor (1885), he advocates, with new discussion, the Revillouts' cotangent interpretation (1881) regarding the seked of a pyramid. As a basis for discussion he gives a hieroglyphic transcription of nos. 56-60, checked with the original of the Rhind papyrus.

Compare also Lepsius (I884). Calice (1903), and Borchardt (1922). Erroneous suggestions are dealt with under Heath (1921).

Report on the contents of the arithmetic in the Akhmlm papyrus [Baillet (1892)] and comparison with similar calculations found in the Rhind papyrus, and in Heron's writings. Compare Tannery (1884).
