The recaptured city was put under martial law, a military governor was appointed, and search was made through all the wards for any Sepoys who might be lurking there in disguise; numbers of them were captured and executed, hundreds of others, after a while, when the fierce desire for vengeance had somewhat abated, were sent for transportation to the Andaman Islands. But the gallows erected in the Chandni Chouk took a heavy toll; as the natives said, "Your vengeance is not dealt out in a day, like that of our previous conquerors." In this they were hardly historically correct; but what they meant was that Timur and Nadir Shah massacred and were done with it, while no man who had been
