Instances illustrative of the Method of promulgating Statutes in England and Scotland.

I.—ENGLAND.

28 May; 3 Edw. I. A. D. 1275.
WRIT to the Justices of Chester, with certain Statutes under the Great Seal, commanding him, amongst other Things, to cause the same to be read, and publicly and solemnly proclaimed in full County, and in every Hundred, City, Borough, Market Town, &c.; and to make Transcripts thereof, and deliver the same to Four or Two of the most trusty and discreet Knights of the same County, for the Purposes in the Writ particularly specified.—Similar Writs were sent to all the Sheriffs of England.

Rex Justi suo Cest Satm. Cum p c͠oem utilitat & tocius regni ni meliorac͠oem & poli ni relevac͠oem, de consilio Prelato & Magnat ejd regni, qasdam visies & quedam statuta, c magna diligencia ordinari & pmo sigillo no signari feim tam a no & Ministris nis quibcqꝫ qa͏̄ ab iis Prelatis & Magnatib suis, ac tota tate regni di, ad petuam memoriam rei geste inviolabili obvan; De Statutis legendis & claman in Co Cest & alibi.Vo mandam in fide & dilecc͠oe quib no tenemini, firmi injgentes, q visiones & statuta illa in pleno Co Cest, & in singu Hund ejusd co, civitatib, burgis, vil̴l̴ catoriis, & locis aliis ubi expedire videritis, legi & publice & sollpni clamari, & ea in oib et sinlis articulis suis & ab oib de bal̴l̴a va futris temporib juxa tenor eodem firmi & inviolabili obvari; & visionib & statutis illis sic clamatis, & ea in sinl locis infa bal̴l̴am vam ubi expedire videritis distincte & ate cscribi, & ea fidelib nis loco illo, sic scipta, sine dioe liari, vo ac bal̴l̴is & fidelib nis ere cum eis judicaitis ostdda, & qatuor v duob militib de fideliorib & discrec͠orib militib co di, de assensu tocius itatis tadi faciatis, ad secritat nam & de itatis ctodien. Et ita vos eatis in hoc mandato no exequendo ne no seu aliis, vos v vos, seu vo decm vm v vo, imputari possit v debeat, q ea que in dis visionib & statutis continentr vel eo aliqua in bal̴l̴a va min plene obventr. WRIT to the Sheriff of Essex, and Hertford, to proclaim and publish a certain Ordinance relating to Money: With the Return thereto.
