The Library it self.Then entring into the Library it self, I saw the vast wide room supported (like a Church) by great square pillars, about which are as many cupbords where the Manuscripts are conserved. On the wall on the right hand, are painted in Fresco the General Councils of the Church, with the Bible in the midst laying open upon a stately Throne, and with the order and place of precedency observed in them: as also some notable accidents in Ecclesiastical history. On the left hand are painted all the famous Libraries anciently mentioned by authors: and upon the great pillars are painted the first Inventors & promoters of learning. This long room spreads it self at last into two wings on each hand; both which are full of curious books, both manuscripts and Printed books; divers of which were shown me with great civility, by Monsignor Holstenius then keeper of this Library, whom I had for-merly
