On May 22, 1973, the President said in a public statement
that "[nleither did I know until the time of my own
investigation [March 21, 1973], of any efforts to provide
[the Watergate defendants] with funds." ,On August 15, 1973,
the President said in a public statement that he was told
on March 21, 1973, that money had been raised for payments
to the defendants for attorney fees and family support and
not "to procure silence from the recipients."
