[The preface to the first volume is dated May 1st, 1889. The supplementary note to preface is dated October 1st, 1891. The actual work began, of course, long before the prior date. The "superintendence" of the Lexicon naturally involved very far-reaching thought and planning (pp. 22, 31, above); but, in addition to this, the proofs of every one of the 21,138 columns were read by Mr. Whitney himself.
