Schott and Winzer,[2] in their new translation of the Pentateuch, published 1816, translate thus,—"Noli uxorem (aliam) ducere præter sororem ejus, ita ut hujus æmulationem excites, et nuditatem illius juxta hanc viventem retegas." Then in a note, i.e., "Noli præter tuam conjugem aliam insuper uxorem ducere quæ illius soror est."[3]
Adam Clarke, the celebrated Wesleyan, in his commentary says, "Thou shalt not marry two sisters at the same time, as Jacob did Rachel and Leah; but there is nothing in this law that rendered it illegal to marry a sister-in-law, when her sister was dead."
Rosenmüller.—"Uxorem ad sororem ejus (duas sorores), ne ducas in matrimonium scil. בחייה in vita ejus ut in fine versus additur, i.e., uxore tuâ vivente. Non igitur prohibet Moses matrimonium cum sorore uxorismortuæ."[4]
- ↑ The Hebrew word צרר (compare 1 Sam.i. 6) is also used amongst the Arabs of the jealousy of the two wives of one husband. Moses therefore, who expressly adds בחייה (whilst she is living), does not by any means prohibit marriage with a deceased wife's sister, but only whilst the wife is living, forbids marriage with her sister, lest the latter should excite the former to jealousy.
