I know that if our lives could meet
Like torrents in a sudden tide,
Our souls should send their shining sheet
Of waters far and wide.

But, ah ! my dear, the springs of mine
Have never yet begun to flow—
And yours, that were so full and fine.
Ran dry so long ago!
