Gilles was fought hard for by Torrens, but he, too, was opposed by all who knew him, and Torrens and Hindmarsh were instructed to see him with a view to his retirement. The commissioners now having testified their approval of me, it was agreed that they should write a letter to Lord Glenelg asking him to confirm ray appointment. I was, moreover, voted a sum, adequate to my expenses, for lecturing in Stamford and other places. I proceed on my journery on the 16th."
