This Index to the History of the Norman Conquest has been adapted to the first edition of all the volumes, and to the third edition of the first and second volume. As the paging of the editions differs considerably, that of the third is marked by the prefix *. In all cases where this does not occur, the same paging serves for both. It was not thought necessary to give references to the second edition, as all the volumes of that edition already have indexes. The extra labour would have been great, not to speak of the confusion which would be caused by three sets of paging.
