THE BATTLE OF BALACLAVA 229 the front of a battery — the front of that twelve- chap. gun battery, with the main body of the Eussian ' cavalry in rear of it, which crossed the lower end of the valley ; and so faithful, so resolute, was Lord Cardigan in executing this part of what he understood to be his appointed task, that he chose out one of the guns which he judged to be about the centre of the battery, rode straight at its fire, and made this, from first to last, his sole guiding star. With the two regiments constituting the first officers act- line, there rode the following officers : Besides tw^Tegi'- Captain Oldham, the officer commanding the first line. 13th Light Dragoons, the officers with the regi- ment were — Captain Goad, Captain Jenyns, Cap- tain Tremayne, Lieutenant Percy Smith (acting Adjutant), Lieutenant Edward Lennox Jervis, Cornet Montgomery, and Cornet Chamberlayne;* whilst with the 17th Lancers there were Captain Morris (in command of the regiment), Captain Eobert White, Captain Winter, Captain Webb, Captain Godfrey Morgan, Lieutenant Thomson, Lieutenant Sir William Gordon, Lieutenant Har- topp, Lieutenant Chad wick (Adjutant), and Cor- net Cleveland.f Pressing always deeper and deeper into this
