It is commonly believed that railroad stocks are concentrated in the hands of a few. That this is not true of the New Haven and Boston & Maine will be apparent when it is known that 43 per cent of the New Haven stockholders own only from one to ten shares each, and 38 per cent own from 11 to 50 shares each. With Boston & Maine stock the proportion of investors holding a small number of shares is even more striking. Those who have from one to ten shares comprise 60 per cent of the total shareholders; those holding from 11 to 50 shares make up 31 per cent; leaving only 9 per cent with holdings which exceed 50 shares each. Of the New Haven stock, 44 per cent is held by women and 15 per cent by trustees and guardians. Of Boston & Maine stock, 49 per cent is held by women and 14 per cent by trustees and guardians.
