Some of the Lesbians renewing their proposal to revolt, Asty- ochus suggested to Pedaritus and the Chians that they should go with the fleet to Lesbos and raise the country ; they would thus increase the number of their allies, and, even if the attempt did not wholly succeed, they would injure the Athenians. But that night there came a despatch from Pedaritus informing Astyochus that certain Erythraean prisoners had been released by the Athenians from Samos on condition of betraying Erythrae, and had gone thither with that inten- tion. Whereupon Astyochus sailed back to Erythrae. So narrowly did he escape falling into the hands of the Athenians. Pedaritus sailed over to meet him. They then enquired about the supposed traitors, and found that the whole matter was a trick which the men had devised in order to get away from Samos ; so they acquitted them of the charge, and Pedaritus returned to Chios, while Astyochus resumed his voyage to Miletus. • Cp. viii. 17 init.
