minibus bieviorcs, divaricati. 5'//g-wa/rf albida, bijubata : pilis longis. Semen oblonguin, comprefTiufculum, bafi DUMBLEDORE RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Fem. Filamenta longifllma, capillaiia abfque antheris, circa piftillum fertile.

Dr. Smith defcribed this fpecies after a dried fpecimen in the collection of his friend Thouin at Paris. Having myself cultivated the same for fome years, it has been in my power to add a little to the specific defcription. From the manner of growing of tliis kind, as well as of others examined in the herbarium of Thunberg, it feems that, producing manyihoots or runners from the roots, they form grassy turfs. What has appeared to me mofl: fuigular in the E. panicea is, that the lowermoft peduncles of the panicle lean horizontally towards one fide, or downwards. The flowers are, perhaps, the fmalleft of the genus. The lateral wrinkles (rugx)'of the exterior corolline valves alfo indicate an affinity to the foregoing, whose flowers they refemble in form. Their likenefs, however, to some of the panicum genus certainly juftifies the fpecific name given by Dr. Smith.
