DIED YESTERDAY.

DEAD ! Roger the true, dearest and noblest of all men;
Ruler and helper and guide; my brother and friend in one.
Roger, it is not like you, leaving me here in the battle ;
Did you not say you would fight — I, sing when the strife was done ?
How can I sing, O Roger, since thus is the conflict won ?
Surely I need you, brother, more than they need you in heaven, —
They who have all things good, and I who had only you;
How shall I live without you, hardening, old, and lonely ?
Nobody cares, as you cared, what manner of things I do.
What if you should not know me, at last when we meet, we two ?
