'^° '^^sSnate July 3, 1986, as "Let Freedom Ring Day", and to request the President to issue a proclamation encouraging the people of the United States to ring bells on gygjj ^j^y immediately following the relighting of the torch of the Statue of Liberty.
Whereas the United States has, for over two hundred years, stood for Hberty, justice, freedom, and opportunity; Whereas the Statue of Liberty has, for one hundred years, symbolized the freedoms and liberties that we as a Nation so deeply cherish; Whereas Liberty Weekend, a division of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, has requested that individuals and groups across the United States ring bells on July 3, 1986, immediately following the relighting of the torch of the Statue of Liberty in New York City; and Whereas such ringing of bells across the United States in conjunction with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty should inspire all Americans to honor our Nation's heritage: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That July 3, 1986, is designated as "Let Freedom Ring Day". The President is requested to issue a proclamation encouraging the people of the United States to ring bells immediately following the relighting of the torch of the Statue of Liberty which is scheduled to occur at approximately 10:53 p.m. on such day.
