Public Law 99-471 99th Congress Joint Resolution To authorize and request the President to proclaim the week of November 23, 1986, to November 30, 1986, as "American Indian Week".
Whereas American Indians were the original inhabitants of the lands that now constitute the United States; Whereas American Indians have made a unique and essential contribution to the United States; Whereas the people of the United States should be reminded of the assistance American Indians provided to the Founding Fathers of our Nation; Whereas the people of the United States should consider the present relationship between American Indians and the United States: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the President is authorized and requested to proclaim the week of November 23, 1986, to November 30, 1986, as "American Indian Week" and to call upon Federal, State, and local governments, interested groups and organizations, and the people of the United States to observe such week with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities. Approved October 14, 1986.
