Joint Resolution Designating May 25, 1987, as "National Day of Mourning for the Victims of the U.S.S. stark".
Whereas the U.S.S. Stark, a frigate in the United States Navy on duty in the Persian Gulf, was struck by Iraqi missiles on May 17, 1987; Whereas the missile attack killed 37 crewmembers of the U.S.S. Stark and injured another 15 crewmembers; Whereas the people of the United States share the loss and grief being experienced by the families of the crewmembers killed or injured in the attack; and Whereas Memorial Day is observed May 25 1987, and commemorates the courageous men and women who have given their lives - in the service of the United States: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That May 25, 1987, is hereby designated as "National Day of Mourning for the Victims of the U.S.S. Stark" in honor of the courageous crewmembers of the U.S.S. Stark who were killed or injured in the attack upon the U.S.S. Stark, and the President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe such day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
