SEC.904 .C ULT U RA LE XP ER I E N CES G RANTS. (a) C ULT U RA LE XPE R I E NC E SG RANTS.— T itle I of the Education of the Deaf Act of 19 8 6 (20 U.S.C. 4301 et se q .) is amended by adding at the end the follo w ing

‘ PARTC—O T HE R PRO G RA MS‘ ‘SEC. 12 1. CULTURAL EXPERIENCES GRANTS. ‘‘(a) IN GENERAL.—The Secretary is authori z ed to, on a competi- tive basis, make grants to, and enter into contracts and cooperative agreements with, eligible entities to support the activities described in subsection (b). ‘‘(b) ACTI V ITIES.—In carrying out this section, the Secretary shall support activities providing cultural e x periences, through appropriate nonprofit organizations with a demonstrated proficiency in providing such activities, that— ‘‘(1) enrich the lives of deaf and hard-of-hearing children and adults; ‘‘(2) increase public awareness and understanding of deaf- ness and of the artistic and intellectual achievements of deaf and hard-of-hearing persons; or ‘‘(3) promote the integration of hearing, deaf, and hard- of-hearing persons through shared cultural, educational, and social experiences. ‘‘(c) APPLICATI O NS.—An eligible entity that desires to receive a grant, or enter into a contract or cooperative agreement, under this section shall submit an application to the Secretary at such time, in such manner, and containing such information as the Secretary may require. ‘‘(d) AUT H ORI Z ATION O F APPROPRIATIONS.—There are authorized to be appropriated to carry out this section such sums as may be necessary for fiscal year 2009 and each of the five succeeding fiscal years.’’. (b) CONFOR M IN G AMEN D MENT.—The title heading of title I of the Education of the Deaf Act of 1986 (20 U.S.C. 4301 et seq.) is amended by adding at the end the following: ‘‘; O THER PRO- GRAMS’’. SEC. 90 5 .AU D IT. Section 203 of the Education of the Deaf Act of 1986 (20 U.S.C. 4353) is amended— (1) in subsection (b)— (A) in paragraph (2), by striking ‘‘sections’’ and all that follows through the period and inserting ‘‘sections Contrac t s.20US C 43 4 1 .
