OFFICE OF CHIEF INSPECTOR : For salaries of fifteen inspectors in charge of divis ions, at $4,500 ea ch ; and five hundre d and twenty -five inspectors, $1,973, 750 : in all, $2,041,250 .

Traveling expenses, For traveling expenses of inspectors, inspectors in charge, the investigations etc . chief post-office inspector, and the assistant chief post-office inspector, and for the traveling expenses of four clerks performing steno- graphic and clerical assistance to post-office inspectors in the investi- gatio n of i mporta nt fra ud cas es, an d for t ests, exhibi ts, do cument s, photographs, office and other necessary expenses incurred by post- office inspectors in connection with their official investigations, $500,0 00 : Provi ded, That the Postmaster General may transfer to the Department of Agriculture not exceeding $26,440 of this sum for chemical investigations . For payment of rewards for the detection, arrest, and conviction of post-office burglars, robbers, and highway mail robbers, $45,000 : Provided, That rewards may be paid, in the discretion of the Post- master General, when an offender of the class mentioned was killed in the act of committing the crime or in resisting lawful arrest : Provided further, That no part of this sum shall be used to pay any reward s at r ates i n exce ss of those specifi ed in Post O ffice Depart - ment Order 7708, dated July 1, 1922, except that not more than $2,000 may be paid, in the discretion of the Postmaster General, for the arres t and convic tion o f any person on the charg e of r obbing a pos t- master or any employee of a post office of money or property of the United States : Provided further, That of the amount herein appro- priated not to exceed $20,000 may be expended, in the discretion of the Po stmast er Gen eral, for th e purp ose of securi ng inf ormati on con - cerning violations of the postal laws and for services and informa- tion looking toward the apprehension of criminals .
