507 Standardization of equipment : To enable the Bureau of Standards Co oper ative stand- ardization of industrial t o coop erate with Gover nment depa rtment s, en ginee rs, an d man u- devic es, etc . facturers in the establishment of standards, methods of testing, and inspection of instruments, equipment, tools, and electrical and mechanical devices used in the industries and by the Government, including the practical specifications for quality and performance of such devices, and the formulation of methods of inspection, lab- oratory, and service tests, including personal services in the District of Columbia and in the field, $1 50,000 ; Standard materials : For purchase, preparation, analysis, and distribution of standard materials to be used in checking chemical analyses in the testing of physical measuring apparatus, including personal services in the District of Columbia and in the field, $8,000 ; Investigation of radioactive substances and X rays : For an inves- ti gation o f radioa ctive su bstances and the methods of thei r meas- urements and testing ; for investigations relative to the development of stand ard spec ificatio ns for X -ray equ ipment an d operat ion ; fo r the investigation of the hazards of X-ray practice ° for the testing and standardization of X-ray protective materials ; for the standard- ization and design of X-ray testing equipment ; for the determina- tion of fundamental physical constants essential to X-ray diagnosis and ther apy to X -ray ana lysis of materia ls and to other t echnical and scientific applications, including personal services in the Dis- trict of Columbia and in the field, $20,000 ; Utilization of waste products from the land : For the survey of the possibilities of the industrial utilization of waste products from the land, including cooperation with colleges, other institutions, and manufacturers including personal services in the District of Colum- bia and in the ?field, $40,000 : Provided, That the Bureau of Standards cooperates with the Bureau of Chemistry and Soils, Department of Agriculture, without duplication of work ; Investigation of automotive engines : For the promotion of econ- omy and efficiency in automotive transportation by land and by air through investig ations of the ba sic principles u nderlying the des ign, performance, operation, and testing of automotive engines, their fuels, lubricants, accessories, and the power-transmitting system used in connection with them, also such elements as brakes and brake linings ; to promote economy in the use of liquid fuels and safety in vehicular traffic, including personal services in the District of Columbia and i n the field, $40 ,000 ; Investigation of dental materials : To investigate the physical and chemical properties of dental materials, including the method of their application and the causes of deterioration of such materials in service, for the purpose of developing standards of quality and standard metho ds of test, incl uding personal s ervices in the D istrict of Columbia and in the field, $5,000 ; Hy draulic laborato ry resea rch : For the determination of funda- mental data useful in hydraulic research and engineering, including laboratory res earch relating t o the behavior a nd control of ri ver and harbor waters, the study of hydraulic structures and water flow, and the developmen t and testing of hydraulic instr uments and acces sories, including personal services in the District of Columbia and in the field, $40,000 ; Du ring the fiscal year 193 3 the he ad of an y depart ment or inde- pendent establishment of the Government having funds available for scientific investigations and requiring cooperative work by the Bureau of Stan dards on scienti fic inve stigatio ns withi n the sc ope of the functions of that bureau, and which the Bureau of Standards is unable to perform within the limits of its appropriations, may, Standards for check- ing chemical analyses .
