75TH CONGRESS, 1ST SESSION-CH . 359-JI-NE 16, 1937 instruments for aerial photographic surveying, $114,000 : Provided, That not more than $35,000 of this amount shall be expended on the coasts of sai d outlying is lands and the Atlantic ent rance to the Panama Canal ; Pac ific coa st : For surveys and n ecessary resu rveys of coa sts on the Pacific Ocean under the jurisdiction of the United States, and incl uding the employment in the f ield and office of one physic ist to develop survey methods based on transmission of sound through sea water, $163,000 ; Tides, currents, and so forth : For continuing researches in physical hydr ography, relating to harbors and bars, and for tidal and c urrent observations on the coasts of the United States, or other coasts under the jurisdiction of the United States, $12,700 ; Coast Pilot : For compilation of the Coast Pilot, including the empl oyment of suc h pilots and nautical expe rts, and sten ographic help in the field and office as may be necessary for the same, $4,200 ; Magnetic and seismological work : For con tinuing m agnetic and seismological observations and to establish meridian lines in connec- tion therewith in all parts of the United States ; making magnetic and seismological observations in other regions under the jurisdiction of the United States ; purchase of additional magnetic and seismologi- cal instruments ; lease of sites where necessary and the erection of temporary magnetic and seismological buildings ; and including the employment in the field and office of such magnetic and seismological observers, and instrument makers and stenographic services as may be nec essa ry, $58 ,500 ; Federal, boundary, and State surveys : For continuing lines of exact levels between the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coasts ; deter- mining geographic positions by triangulation and traverse for the control of Federal, State, boundary, county, city, and other surve ys and engineering works in all parts of the United States ; including special geodetic surveys of first-order triangulation and leveling in regions subject to earthquakes, not exceeding $10,000 ; determining field astronomic positions and the variation of latitude, including the maintenance and operation of the latitude observatories at Ukiah, California, and Gaithersburg, Maryland, not exceeding $2,500 each ; establishing lines of exact levels, determining geographic positions by triangulation and traverse, and making astronomic observations in Alaska ; and continuing gravity observations in the United States and for making such observations in regions under the jurisdiction of the United States and also on islands and coasts adjacent thereto, $93,000, of whi ch amount not to exceed $3 5,440 may be expended for personal services in the District of Columbia ; Miscellaneous objects : For the pre paration or p urchase of pl ans and specifications of vessels and the employment of such hull drafts- men in the field and office as may be necessary for the same
