TITLE II—DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE LEGAL ACTIVITIES AND GENERAL ADMINISTRATION SALARIES AND EXPENSES, GENERAL ADMINISIHATION

For expenses necessary for the administration of the Department of Justice and for examination of judicial offices, including purchase (one for replacement only) and hire of passenger motor vehicles; and miscellaneous and emergency expenses authorized or approved by the Attorney General or the Assistant Attorney General for Administration; $7,500,000. SALARIES A N D E X P E N S E S, GENERAL LEGAL ACTIVITIES

For expenses necessary for the legal activities of the Department of Justice, not otherwise provided for, including miscellaneous and emergency expenses authorized or approved by the Attorney General or the Assistant Attorney General for Administration; not to exceed $20,000 for expenses of collecting evidence, to be expended under the direction of the Attorney General and accounted for solely on his certificate; and advances of public moneys pursuant to law (31 U.S.C. 529); $28,000,000: Provided, That not to exceed $136,000 may be transferred to this appropriation from the "Alien Property Fund, World W a r II ", for the general administrative expenses of alien property activities, including rent of private or Government-owned space in the District of Columbia. For expenses necessary for the enforcement of antitrust and kindred laws, $8,992,000: Provided, That none of this appropriation shall be expended for the establishment and maintenance of permanent regional offices of the Antitrust Division. For necessary expenses of the offices of the United States attorneys and marshals, including purchase of firearms and ammunition; $48,038,000, of which not to exceed $50,000 shall be available for the employment of temporary deputy marshals in lieu of bailiffs at a rate of not to exceed $12.80 per day: Provided, That of the amount herein appropriated $17,500 may be used for the emergency replacement of one prisoner-carrying bus upon certificate of the Attorney General: Provided further, That of the amount herein appropriated not to exceed $200,000 shall be available for payment of compensation and expenses of Commissioners appointed m condemnation cases under Rule 7 l A (h) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. For expenses, mileage, and per diems of witnesses and for per diems in lieu of subsistence, as authorized by law, and not to exceed $500,000 for such compensation and expenses of witnesses (including expert witnesses) pursuant to section 524 of title 28, United States Code and gectlous 4244-48 of title 18, United States Code; $5,000,000: Provided. That no part of the sum herein appropriated shall be used to pay anj^ witness more than one attendance fee for any one calendar day.
