Be it enacted by the Senate (UKI Honxr of Representatives of the Vnited States of Amenea In Congres>s uHHetnhhtL That Sergeant Gary iSgt.s,Gary L. R v e r USMC. L. Rivers, I'liited States Marine Corps, retired, is relieved of all liability for repayment to the Fnited States of the sum of $L 158.86, representing the amount of overpayment of compensation from (1) overcrediting a variable reenlistment bonus of $f)75.H(); (2) failure to liquidate a previous overpayment of $289.81: (8) payment of $282150 of allotments without corresponding deductions; and (4) failure to recoup a pro rata portion of reenlistment bonus and variable reenlistment bonus for a period of time lost, in the amount of $6.45. In the audit and settlement of the accounts of any certifying oi- disbursing officer of the United States, full credit shall be given for the amount for which liability is relieved by this Act. SEC. 2. (a) The Secretary of the Treasury is authorized and directed to pay, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, to the said Sergeant Gary L. Rivers, the sum of any amounts received or withheld from him on account of the overpayments referred to in the first section of this Act. (b) No part of the amount appropriated in this Act shall be paid or delivered to or received by any agent or attorney on account of services rendered in connection with this claim, and the same shall be unlawful, any contract to the contrary notwithstanding. Any person violating the provisions of this Act shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof shall be fined in any sum not exceeding $1,000. Approved September 21, 1972. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Treasury is authorized and directed to pay, out of any money in the Treasury, not otherwise appropriated, to Captain Claire E. Brou (retired. United States A i r Force ( F R 3195973)), of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, the sum of $100,000, in full settlement as r e c o ^ i t i o n and assumption of the compassionate responsibility of the United States for all her claims arising in connection with injuries she sustained in April 1968, due to extraordinary circumstances, while undergoing a diagnostic study at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Such injuries left her partially paralyzed and permanently disabled. SEC. 2. No part of the amount appropriated in the first section of this Act shall be paid or delivered to or received by any agent or attorney on account of services rendered in connection with such claims, and the same shall be unlawful, any contract to the contrary notwithstanding.
