Be it enacted by the Senate and House cy" Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary Certain bonds of the Treasury be, and he hereby is, authorized and directed to cause of g:Qi;">;‘;*°{)‘; to be cancelled and given up three several bonds given to the United cancelled and States for the payment of duties, at the port of Portland and Falmouth, ¤iV•?¤ ug to on merchandize imported by Smith and Hersey, of the city of Port- Egfth an H"` land, in Maine, to wit: the first numbered twenty-four, signed by Smith and Hersey and Lewis Mitchell, and dated March eighth, eighteen hundred and forty-eight, on which is due and unpaid the sum of one thousand and fifty-four dollars and eight cents; the second, numbered twenty-eight, signed by Smith and Hersey and Eli Sargent, and dated March eleventh, eighteen hundred and forty-eight, on which is due and unpaid the sum of four hundred and ninety-four dollars and forty-eight cents; the third, numbered ninety-three, signed by Smith and Hersey and Nathaniel Gordon, and dated June third, eighteen hundred and forty-eight, on which is due and unpaid the sum of live hundred and eight dollars and twenty cents, making in the aggregate the sum of two thousand and fifty-six dollars and seventy-six cents, which bonds were given for the duties on three cargoes of molasses, imported by Smith and Hersey, in the brig Elmira and barque Maria Hersey; six hundred and seven hogsheads thereon on which the duties amount to the said sum of two thousand and fifty-six dollars and seventy- six cents, having been destroyed by fire on the ninth day of January, eighteen hundred and forty-nine, while in warehouse, and under the €XGl¤Siv<-1 control of the government: Provided, That Satisfactory evi- Pf°Vi¤0· dence shall be produced to the Secretary of the Treasury of the destruction of the said molasses as aforesaid.
